Abstract
This study analyzes the determinants for households experiencing catastrophic health expenditures. To confirm the determinants, we analyzed the Korean Health Panel Survey data for the years 2015 and 2016(beta version). Incidence rates for catastrophic health expenditures were estimated at a 10% threshold for each year, and the determinants of households experiencing catastrophic health expenditures were identified by integrating data for 2015 and 2016 (Study Model 1). Finally, we examined the characteristics of households newly exposed to catastrophic health expenditures (Study Model 2). The incidences of catastrophic health expenditures (based on a 10% threshold) was 37.5% in 2015 and 38.5% in 2016, an increase of 1.0%p over the year. According to an analysis of two years of data integration, the characteristics of major household heads and household characteristics influenced catastrophic health expenditures. However, sex, educational standard, state of employment, marital status and subjective health status of household heads, the number of household member, number of chronic diseases in households, and the elderly (people aged 65 years or older) living in households affected new incidences catastrophic health expenditures.
